Las Animas in Bent County is near the historic Bent's Fort, a famous trading post from the mid 1800's that was built to serve beaver trappers decades before Colorado's famous gold rush. Las Animas has been an agricultural center in southeastern Colorado for much of its history. In the late 20th century, Colorado's cities along the front range began to take away the water rights of a lot of eastern Colorado's agricultural areas, and today Las Animas faces a dismal future as the region's rights to water from the Arkansas River dry up.

Named after foreman John Limon, it was known as a hub city and today the important transportation highways I-70, US-24, US-40, and several state highways all intersect here. In 1990 a tornado ripped through Main Street of Limon, destroying the town hall, post office, newspaper, state patrol office, the bank, the grocery store, and most of the town's police cars. Only minor injuries were reported, however most businesses were destroyed and 117 families were homeless.

Founded in 1882, Louisville is just east of Boulder and a bit north of Denver. Coal mining continued after the gold industry dried up until the early 1950's when coal began falling out of the energy industry's favor. Today Louisville is a bedroom community for Boulder and Denver, and is a quaint attractive country town.
