Sterling Sterling Colorado Hotels

Sterling, founded in 1881 on the South Platte River Valley, boomed when the Overland Trail was heavily traveled (1858-1869). Many other towns on the trail are gone, ruins and old foundations still exist along the county roads and fields throughout the area.

Trinidad

Trinidad was born as a lusty frontier town, a supply depot on the Santa Fe Trail at Raton Pass, New Mexico. Trinidad later served as a railhead for cattle drives, featuring cowboys driving the cattle through the center of town, whooping and firing six shooters overhead. Coal mining in the area was also an important economic factor, as the gold mining industry and the supporting railroads need high quality coal, and the Trinidad area supplied it.
