Pagosa Springs was known for its hot springs even before the white man showed up. The army built Fort Lewis there in 1878, and within 10 years the civilian town supported a booming lumber industry and the county seat of Archuleta County. The Ute Indians called it Pagosah which meant healing waters in their language.

Silverton, once the playground of Silver Barons and Railroad Kings, is in the incredibly rugged San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. Its rich mining history, Victorian construction, and the Durango-Silverton railroad make it a richly rewarding destination for tourists in Colorado.
