Brighton was settled during the Gold Rush of the 1860's as Hughes Station. The town became a supply point for the miners as well as an agricultural center. The name of the town was later changed to Brighton after the New York home town of a prominent business man's wife. Brighton was named Adams County Seat in 1904. Agriculture continues to be the town's major industry.
