Fort Morgan was founded in 1884 by Abner Baker near the site of old Fort Morgan. The old fort was built to protect wagon trains, stage coaches, mail service and increased immigration into the area. The fort was abandoned after the Native Americans were brought under control and by 1870 there was very little left of the fort. The new town was founded as a potential agricultural center for the area.
