Lamar, founded in 1886, was the last town to be established by townsite promoters. The town was named after Lucius Quintius Lamar, Secretary of the Interior under Grover Cleveland, in order to secure a land office. Lamar is also the youngest town of any size on the main line of the Santa Fe railroad.
