Littleton was founded in 1872 by Richard S. Little. He originally was hired to survey an irrigation ditch along the South Platte River in 1860. Soon after, he filed on 160 acres to farm. By 1867 Little had opened the Rough and Ready Flour Mill and sold plots to his employees. A traditional main street became the heart of the town and Littleton was incorporated in 1890.
