Los Caminos Antiguos Scenic Byway

This 129 mile scenic byway takes the adventurer through the San Louis Valley, home to Colorado's oldest surviving community, San Louis. This valley was first occupied in the 1600's by misssionaries, when the spanish conquistadores laid claim to it in the name of colonial Spain. Located in Conejos, Our Lady of Guadalupe is the oldest continuously operated church in the state, dating back to the early spanish missionaries. Fort Garland, commanded by Kit Carson, was one of the early military outposts and is open for you to explore.

Don't miss the Great Sand Dunes national Monument one of Colorado's natural wonders. Hundreds of feet high, these huge drifting dunes of sand were gathered by the prevailing west wind and piled at the base of the magnificent Sangre de Christo Mountains.

Wildlife viewing and incredible vistas reward the modern explorer. For more information contact: Bureau of Land Managment - San Louis Resource Area, 1921 State Street, Alamosa, CO 81101 (719) 589-4975
